Forum Abstract

Learning with "wisdom" leads to "purpose"! This forum explores how smart technologies can promote language learning through the principles of contextualization, authenticity, and communication, achieving "learning for application." The integration of smart technologies—such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, learning analytics, the Internet of Things, and robotics—not only opens new pathways for language learning but also provides learners with a purposeful learning experience.

Through specific cases and empirical research, the forum examines how smart technologies can effectively support language acquisition both inside and outside the classroom, facilitating the transition from language knowledge to practical language use. The forum will share strategies for applying smart technologies based on various language teaching theories, covering both classroom instruction and self-directed learning. It will demonstrate how the flexible use of these technologies can achieve deep integration of learning, application, and evaluation, helping learners improve their communicative abilities in real-world language environments and truly achieve "learning with purpose."

Presentations

Example

Wong Lung Hsiang: "The Application of Generative AI in Second Language Learning: Practical Strategies Based on Second Language Acquisition Theory"

This presentation explores the application of generative AI in second language learning, combining second language acquisition theory to demonstrate how comprehensible input, language output, and interaction can support classroom teaching and self-directed learning. The focus is on designing "chain-of-thought" prompts to enhance student-AI interaction, improving language proficiency and critical thinking. Even teachers with basic prompt engineering skills can design and implement these strategies, promoting the popularization and efficiency of language learning.

Example

Yanjie Song: "Generative AI in Metaverse Language Learning: Learningverse Intelligent Companion System Design and Immersive IELTS Simulation Applications"

This presentation introduces the innovative Learningverse intelligent companion system, which combines large language model (LLM) technology to create an immersive learning ecosystem for language learners and IELTS candidates. The platform features three simulated scenarios: a library, a bank, and a gym. Learners can enhance their English proficiency through natural conversations in virtual environments—searching for academic materials in the library, practicing financial conversations at the bank, and simulating social interactions at the gym. The intelligent companion provides real-time grammar corrections, personalized feedback, and targeted IELTS training. Through scenario-based learning and instant interaction with the intelligent companion, students can efficiently overcome language barriers and achieve their target IELTS scores.

Example

Yun Wen: "Designing Intelligent Immersive Learning Environments to Promote Purposeful Dialogue in Second Language Learning"

Immersive virtual learning environments provide second language learners with authentic and low-pressure spaces for dialogue, facilitating the use of the target language. However, the accuracy of interactions with AI agents in previous immersive learning environments has been limited, affecting learners' experiences and outcomes. This presentation explores how to integrate generative AI and augmented reality technologies to promote purposeful dialogue and shares design and implementation strategies.

Example Example

Chunping Zheng & You Su: "Empowering English Productive Skills Teaching with Intelligent Chatbots: Current Status, Pathways, and Cases"

This presentation focuses on the application of intelligent chatbots in teaching English speaking and writing. It systematically analyzes the integration of language learning theories and technological empowerment, exploring teaching principles, application models, and practical outcomes. Through multiple classroom case studies, it demonstrates learners' diverse strategies and learning outcomes in different scenarios, providing replicable and transferable examples for participants. The presentation also addresses key issues such as teacher role transformation and ethical boundaries in teaching.
